Atletico Madrid went on to defeat Real Madrid 4-2 in the Copa del Rey Round of 16.

Atletico Madrid clinched a last-gasp victory in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 on the back of two extra-time goals against Real Madrid on Friday. It turned out to be a nervy Madrid derby, with the city rivals scoring two goals each during the 90-minute play. Antoine Griezmann helped Atletico Madrid take a lead at the stroke of the 100th minute with an exceptional solo effort. The goal certainly boosted their confidence as Atletico looked more dominant during the remaining phase of the game. Rodrigo Riquelme increased the lead moments before the final whistle.

While Atletico Madrid displayed commendable team spirit in the big-ticket clash, Griezmann deserves special credit for his performance during the extra time. The French forward received a through ball just outside the Real Madrid box. Instead of looking for any passing option, Griezmann began a stunning run down the right flank.

As most of the Real Madrid defenders were at the centre, only Vinicius Jr was chasing Griezmann. The Brazilian winger failed to stop the run. Griezmann decided to finish it on his own. He first got rid of Vinicus with an exceptional cut before baffling Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin with a deadly shot.

After the ball entered the net from the top corner, Griezmann broke into an emphatic celebration. He took off his shirt before joining the other Atletico Madrid players on the sidelines. A clip of his magical finish was dropped on an X account named Football Tweet, with a caption reading, “Antoine Griezmann’s extra time minute winner against Real Madrid.”

After the post surfaced on the internet, several fans labelled Antoine Griezmann as “one of the most underrated footballers of this generation.” Here is how fans have reacted to the goal:

Atletico Madrid’s Samuel Lino broke the deadlock in the 39th minute. Real Madrid did make it all square only a few minutes later due to a blunder from Jan Oblak. Striker Alvaro Morata scored the second goal for Atletico Madrid in the 57th minute. Jesulu brought Real Madrid back to the contest when only eight minutes were left of the regulation time.
