New Delhi: Accolades have been pouring in thick and fast for JCT and India striker Sunil Chhetri after being adjudged the player of the National Football League this year, but the Delhi player has pledged his allegiance to his club.

"I intend staying on with JCT. Moreover, the club's base at Phagwara is nearer to my home," Chhetri says.

Chhetri, with 12 goals in the NFL this season, was the highest scorer, which meant it was a double whammy at a presentation ceremony in Gurgaon. The 22-year-old India forward also won the award for the highest goal scorer in the six-month long league.

The diminutive JCT player seeks inspiration from thrice World Footballer of the Year and double world champion, Brazil forward Ronaldo. Chhetri also revealed that getting around Mahindra United defender Mahesh Gawli was the toughest in the competition.

And understandably, Chhetri's most fond memories from the just-concluded NFL has been against Mohun Bagan in January, "which my team won 2-0. I scored both the goals and was the man of the match."

He also drew words of praise from Mohun Bagan ace Baichung Bhutia. "Sunil is a good talent."

It was Mohun Bagan itself who discovered Chhetri, and fielded him as soon as he finished school, but moved out two years ago after his three-year association with the Bengal giants.
