Liverpool: Kenny Dalglish has conceded that Liverpool expected too much from Andy Carroll following his 35 million pounds switch from Newcastle United last season.
But the England international scored only two goals in nine appearances during the second half of the season, which saw him being troubled by thigh and knee injuries.
The 22-year-old fell prey to the knee injury less than a week after a strong performance against Manchester City by scoring two goals and helping the club to a 3-0 win in the process.
However, the pre-season went well for the former Newcastle hitman, and he has since started both of the club's Premier League games.
"Andy's fitness is an improvement since last season, because he was never really fit when he came here,” said the Liverpool manager," Dalglish said.
"We pushed him in probably earlier than we should have last season and it wasn't particularly fair on him.
"We were a wee bit unkind on him and asked a bit too much of him. This season he certainly looks a lot fitter.
"Andy is just 22. Every time he'll play, people will ask if that's the best he can be. But you never stop, you always want to improve.
"The best time to judge him will be when he’s fully fit."
