Maldini remains optimistic over Milan’s Scudetto chances
AC Milan are in the third position in Serie A.

New Delhi: The legend of the Rossoneri believes that his side are still in with a chance of claiming the Scudetto this season.

AC Milan have had a fairly inconsistent season to date, however despite this they find themselves sitting in a respectable third position in the standings.

They have managed to record 33 points from the opening 17 matches, and are nine points back from their cross town rivals and reigning champions Inter Milan, who currently lead the way.

With this in mind, many have ruled Milan out of the Scudetto race, declaring that it is a race between two – Inter and Juventus. Milan’s captain Paolo Maldini does not agree with this however, as he feels that there is still a long way to go in the season.

"We won a championship in 1999 that seemed all but lost, so there is no reason why we won’t be able to do it again," Maldini declared in an interview with Milan Channel.

"It would be absurd at this stage to say that we were out of the running for the championship, as we will have many opportunities to catch Inter.

"We will fight until the end, hoping that fate is on our side along the way," he added.

The Rossoneri legend closed out the interview by reflecting on the year of 2008, a year that is set to be his penultimate as a professional football player.

"2008 was a good year. I'm happy how I lived this year. I was able to play with continuity and without any troubles to my knees, so that was pleasing.

"As a club, we made many new purchases, and many have shone, especially Ronaldinho," he added.

"We look forward to a brighter 2009.”
