What has changed in the UEFA Champions League format?
UEFA have scrapped the group-stage format that featured 32 teams that they followed for 21 seasons. In this format, all the teams were put into eight groups of four based on a seeded draw. The top two advanced to the knockouts. Each group featured matches with every team facing their rivals in home and away games.
The newly enacted format now features a single-standings league with all 36 teams playing eight games against eight different opponents. The top eight will directly qualify for the knockouts whereas teams ranking from ninth to 24th will compete in the knock playoffs. Teams ranked 25th or more will be eliminated from the competition.
