New Delhi: Germany's Moritz Fuerste and India's Akashdeep Singh bagged the top price among the foreigners and Indians, respectively, at the Hockey India League (HIL) players' auction here on Thursday.
Fuerste made the biggest splash on Thursday breaking the barrier of $100,000, which is the first and only instance at the HIL auctions so far. The midfielder, FIH Player of the year in 2012 and a two-time Olympic gold medallist, got richer by $105,000 as Kalinga Lancers splurged the huge sum on the German. His base price was $30,000.
Among the top Indian players, forward Akashdeep fetched the big sum of $84,000 from a base price of $20,000, leaving behind the likes of India captain Sardar Singh, who with $58,000 from Punjab Warriors, didn't even feature in the top 10 Indian buys of the day.
The surprise names in the Indian moolah-makers were Gurmail Singh and Mandeep Singh who took home $81,000 and $70,000 from Dabang Mumbai and Delhi Waveriders, respectively.
But the Germans remained the top earners as Fuerste was joined by team-mates Florian Fuchs and Tobias Hauke (both ($96,000) to become the top three earners of the 2015 HIL auction.
A surprise among the list of foreigners was the name of Austrian Benjamin Stanzl who got richer by $35,000 that the Delhi Waveriders spent on him. The top 10 foreign buys were from only four countries - Germany (3), Australia (5), South Africa (1) and Australia (1).
