Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse left fans thrilled and made him a standout performer in Sony’s animated hit. Although the character remained absent from the sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, rumours earlier suggested that Cage might be reprising the role in a live-action series. Now, recent reports confirm that the actor is indeed in talks with Sony and the news was confirmed by Cage himself.
Set in 1930s New York City, the series promises to follow the Noir variant’s adventures as he fights the underworld in his unique style. Interestingly, the show will not focus on Peter Parker but will follow Spider-Man Noir’s story in its universe.
During an interview with Collider at SXSW 2024, where he was promoting his latest project, Arcadian, Cage opened up about the possibility of reprising his role in Sony’s series and what attracted him to take the role. The Ghost Rider star shared, “Well, I can say that we have been talking. It’s no secret that I love the character. I think the character provides another mash up of sorts. I can combine my favorite golden age performances, i.e. Robinson, Cagney, Bogart, with a character that is, I guess, widely considered [to be] Stan Lee’s masterpiece.”
“I see it as a kind of foray into a pop art mash up of, sort of, a [Jungian] Lichtenstein, mash up by way of Bogart and Cagney, but nothing’s definitive yet. It’s just conversation,” Cage added.
Earlier, when news of the live-action Spider-Man Noir surfaced online, reports also suggested the development of Silk: Spider Society. However, according to The Ankler, the production house opted to halt work on Silk and prioritize the Nicholas Cage-led Noir series. Silk was among the initial live-action projects greenlit by Sony and Amazon.
According to a source close to the studio, the series would have focused on Korean-American heroine Cindy Moon, who gets bitten by the same spider that granted Peter Parker his special powers and she goes on a journey to find her missing family.
As of now, there’s no official announcement regarding the release date for the Spider-Man Noir series featuring Nicholas Cage. However, fans are hoping for the return of the animated character in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is scheduled to release in 2025.
