Hiking Quotes & Song Lyrics
Drop your favorite quote or song lyric for a super simple caption. If you’re at a loss for words, this is one of the easiest ways to caption a photo. Just pull out a lyric from a travel or nature-related song, or think of your favorite quotes. Here are some funny, reflective, and inspirational options to help you get started: “Adventure is worthwhile.” —Aesop “It’s the climb.” —Miley Cyrus, “The Climb” “Not all who wander are lost.” —J.R.R. Tolkien “Leave the road, take the trails.” —Pythagoras “We off the grid, grid, grid.” —Kanye West, “Off the Grid” “Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” —Gary Snyder “Where the signposts end, the trail begins.” —Marty Rubin “A walk in nature walks the soul back home.” —Mary Davis “The path reveals itself once you start walking.” —Abhijit Naskar “The earth has music for those who listen.” —George Santayana “Clouds come and go, the mountain remains.” —Meeta Ahluwalia “There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.” —Beverly Sills “Are we out of the woods yet?” —Taylor Swift, “Out of the Woods” “Find me where the wild things are.” —Alessia Cara, “Wild Things” “To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.” —Mary Davis “She needs wide open spaces.” —The Chicks, “Wide Open Spaces” “The world reveals itself to those who travel on foot.” —Werner Herzog “It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” —Sir Edmund Hillary “There is always an adventure waiting in the woods.” —Katelyn S. Trevelyan “Remember to look up to the stars, not down to your feet.” —Stephen Hawking “The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness.” —John Muir “I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” —Robert Frost “I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees.” —Henry David Thoreau “There is wisdom in climbing mountains…for they teach us how truly small we are.” —Jeff Wheeler “The sea tells you everything will be fine. The mountains tell you it doesn’t matter anyway.” —Adeel Ahmed Khan “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson
How to Take Great Photos During a Hike
Hike during dawn or dusk for the best lighting. These are the best times to take outdoor photos because the light is warmer and you can avoid harsh shadows. Cloud inversions (the cloudy-looking layer of air that forms when temperatures near the ground are lower than higher in the air) are also more likely to happen. This can create an even cooler landscape shot, and if you’re lucky enough to catch the golden hour, the sky might be shades of pink, orange, or red!
Wear bright colors or look for shots that have bright colors. A bright color can make your photo pop, especially since blacks and whites are harder to capture. The vibrant blues and greens of a lake, forest, or mountain look stunning on camera, but if you’re not in a picturesque place, don’t worry! Your friend’s bright jacket, tent, or even a random flower can add color to an otherwise drab scene.
Follow the rule of thirds and fill the entire frame with your subject. For an aesthetically pleasing composition, place your subject in the left or right third of the frame, leaving the other two thirds more open. If possible, align the horizon at the upper or lower third of the frame, instead of directly in the middle. Getting up close and filling the entire frame with your subject can also eliminate any distractions, emphasize details, and create a more powerful photo. Professional photojournalist and photographer Heather Gallagher says to “shoot as much as possible” to “play around with different styles and see what really fits for you.”
How to Create the Perfect Hiking Caption
Come up with a caption that’s short, sweet, and snappy. According to social media expert Kasey Dunn, your caption should be concise to “captivate the audience in the first eight seconds” of seeing your post. After a few lines of text, Instagram hides the rest of your caption, so include the most eye-catching details at the beginning. Most users won’t read a lengthy caption, so when in doubt, keep it sweet and simple. Have fun experimenting with emojis to add more personality and character! Include questions in your caption to increase engagement. For instance, you could caption your post with “Who wants to hike with me?” or “Any trail recommendations?” Social media and digital marketing consultant Candace Gasper also recommends “seeing what’s trending in pop culture and utilizing it in your post.” If there’s a viral song or meme, for example, you could reference it in your caption. Gaspar also recommends “coming up with five or six different captions” and choosing the best one. If you’re not sure about which one to use, reach out to a friend or family member and ask for their opinion.
