Step-by-Step Guide on How to Use Smudge Sticks
Gather your supplies. One sage smudge stick should be enough when saying a prayer for cleansing. Before you smudge a house, choose a fireproof container that’s heat resistant. A shell works, but a small cast-iron pan is also an option. Decide on matches or a lighter as your fire source; a lighter tends to be easier when moving around a home while burning sage. Some alternatives to sage include cedar, associated with longevity, a lemony juniper herb, or Palo Santo, an aromatic wood referred to as “holy wood,” which cleanses energies and invites healing.
Clear space of clutter or mess. If your home is messy or full of excess clutter, it may interrupt your smudge stick cleansing, either physically or mentally. Mentally, you'll feel a sense of disorder in your mind, while physically, you could trip over things that may block your path. Make it easy to move from room to room by ensuring your home is as tidy as possible.
Open your windows and curtains to clear negative energy. It’s very important to allow any negative energy to exit the home and invite new fresh air in before you move through your current home or perform a cleansing new home ritual. If it’s too cold outside, try to crack open one window in each room to symbolically let out the bad energy.
