Making a Call to the United States from Denmark
Dial 00 for the exit code in Denmark. Press 0 twice on your phone’s keypad to call any number outside of Denmark. This step is required first before you enter the actual phone number. Each country has its own unique exit code.
Dial 1 for the country code for the United States. Country codes differ for each country but 1 is the number to dial for the United States.
Input the 3 digit area code for the phone number. The 3 digit area code is found in the front of the phone number and is traditionally inside of parentheses. Each state in the United States has its own unique area code(s) that divide certain phone regions.
Dial the remaining 7 digits of the phone number. Finish entering the rest of the numbers into the keypad. The entire 10-digit number should now be inputted. If you are using a landline, the phone should start automatically ringing. If you are using a cell phone hit the send or call button on your phone.
Considering Alternative Methods of Communication
Skype or video conference with the person. Video conferencing software like Skype allows users to speak to each other online. Download the conferencing software and schedule a call with the person you want to speak to. Using video conferencing software will prevent additional charges on your phone bill for international calls.
Use phone apps like Snapchat to keep in touch. Apps like Snapchat, Wickr Me, and Snow allow users to share videos with people from all over the world without incurring international phone fees. It won't be quite the same as talking to the person in real-time, but you can still use it to keep in touch. Find the app in the app store and download it.
Communicate through social media, online chat, or email. Use the direct message function to talk to people who live in the United States. Email is a slower means of communication but can also be used, especially if the person regularly checks their email. This is a great way to have a text conversation and avoid international calling fees. Popular chat applications include Gchat, Yahoo Messenger, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger. Some of these apps also have video-conferencing options, but keep in mind they may use up data.
