In some places in the country, the festival of Sankranthi is celebrated through rooster or chicken races. As per reports, rearing of the birds before the festival can prove to be very profitable. People make profits through such ventures. Veeramachaneni Sandeep Chowdary from the village of Balighattam in Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh, started the business of chicken rearing, away from his village. The reports state that he was encouraged by his father and friends to start this business. According to him, he is very fond of these birds. For chicken rearing, he has erected iron fences around a 2-acre land, and the chickens are kept within it. He has more than 50 hens that are able to lay eggs, and more than 80 chickens overall that have reached puberty ages.
Sandeep says that giving the chickens protein rich foods like almond and pistachios daily for 3 months would make them fit for the Sankranthi races. So much so, that they would fly during the race. Some of his chickens were brought from East Godavari, while some other varieties were brought from places like Peru and Mettu in Andhra Pradesh. The reports say that the Peruvian chickens are the best when it comes to flying the highest. They have the lowest bone strength, so they were crossbred for the native chicken. Sandeep claims that these chickens are going to stand out the most in the upcoming races.
He also spoke about the prices of these roosters. The Peru breed is currently being sold for Rs 1,50,000. The Peru cross chicken is available at a price of Rs 1,00,000, the rich Mettu is available for Rs 80,000, and the Mettu is available for Rs 70,000. According to the reports, one could earn profits worth Rs 15 lakh with this business, within a year. This year the profits could be doubled, claimed the reports further.
