Children from disadvantaged social backgrounds often attend government schools in various states, where female education is sometimes perceived merely as a precursor to future marriage prospects. In addition to financial limitations, addressing issues such as school governance and repairing infrastructure affected by COVID-19 shutdowns remains a priority. The Annual Status of Education Report 2022 highlights a significant increase in enrollment at government schools for the first time in sixteen years. While government schools are typically associated with insufficient funding and inadequate facilities, a school in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh is gaining attention for its students’ science exhibition, showcasing their innovative creations.

Students of Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Memorial Municipal Corporation school in Kurnool immersed themselves in live science lessons through practical experiments. During an interaction with News18, students explained their experiments in English. For instance, Muskan, an eighth-grade student, demonstrated a Z-shaped microscope crafted from book paper and lenses, illustrating its functionality.

Additionally, two ninth-grade students showcased a paper caricature of a human skeleton, highlighting various body parts from the skull to the pelvis. Another student demonstrated the chemical effects of electric current by submerging an electric wire, powered by a battery, into lemon, water, salt water, and normal water, illustrating their conductivity.

Teachers expressed pride in their student’s ability to articulate their projects in English with practised proficiency. They emphasized the importance of nurturing students’ intellectual capabilities in government schools and assisting them in translating their ideas into reality. They believe that with adequate support, students from government schools can excel and succeed in life, akin to their counterparts in private schools.

Initiatives like the science exhibition at Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Memorial Municipal Corporation school highlight the potential of students from disadvantaged backgrounds to excel in academics and innovation. With proper encouragement and resources, these students can overcome challenges and achieve remarkable success.
