At least 10 people were killed when a wall collapsed in Noida.

New Delhi: At least 10 people were killed when a wall collapsed during the heavy monsoon rains that lashed Delhi and surrounding areas on Monday evening.

The tragic incident took place in sector 58 of Noida, neigbouring Delhi. Nine other people were reportedly injured in the wall collapse.

Noida police officials said that the dead included four children and two women.

The sudden showers brought some respite for Delhi from the sweltering heat on Monday evening, as temperatures plummeted to 36 degrees.

The downpour also caused water logging in some areas and major traffic jams all across Delhi including India Gate, Zakir Hussain Marg, Ashoka Road, Shahjahan Road, Rajpath and Pragati Maidan, the Outer Ring Road bypass, the Lajpat Nagar-Ashram route, Delhi Cantonment, the Red Fort-Kashmiri Gate road and Dhaula Kuan.

Heavy rains also affected the movement of aircraft at Indira Gandhi International Airport with a number of flights being delayed by up to two hours and some being diverted.

Due to heavy rains, flights coming from Aurangabad, Lucknow, Goa and Bangalaore were delayed by up to two hours, sources at the airport said.

The use of main runway led to congestion at the national capital's airspace and some of them were diverted.

The season's heaviest rainfall continued for more than five hours on Monday evening.

Delhi received 29.4 mm of rains between 1730 hrs IST and 2030 hrs IST, a senior official at the Meteorological Department said, adding rain gauges in the city recorded 69 mm of rains from Sunday evening till 2030 hrs IST on Monday. More rains are predicted for Tuesday.

There were also reports of a wall collapse in Sangam Vihar where two people were injured and Jehangirpuri in Delhi.
