The ‘108’ advanced life support ambulance service rescued more than 50,000 persons since its launch in May 2010. The service provided by the Kerala Medical Services Corporation (KMSCL) in association with Ziqitza is available in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha.
The ambulance service operators said that the 50,000th person rescued by the service was 72-year-old Rajamma hailing from Neyyatinkara. The service has attended to 46,638 cases in the capital and 3,348 cases in Alappuzha.
Project of head of the service Radheesh V attributed the success of the service to a group of dedicated personnel as part of the Emergency Management Team. ‘’Their presence of mind in cases of severe emergencies is laudable,’’ he said.
The 108 service is managed by a call centre in Technopark, which functions round the clock. When a call is received at the call centre, the staff alerts the nearest ambulance.
The medical technicians on the ambulance provide the patients first aid and will then take them to the nearest government hospital for further treatment. The ambulance does not carry corpses and also will not attend to cases that do not have an emergency nature.
