2011: South Indian films focused on new subjects
Instead of the traditional fights and songs, audiences were given new subjects this year in South Indian films.

Tamil: 'Aadukalam'

Director: Vetrimaran

Cast: Dhanush, Taapsee Pannu, V L S Jayabalan and Kishore

Instead of the traditional Jallikattu (bull fight), audiences were treated to a rooster fight in the film. A turn of events leads to the ward (Dhanush) overruling his mentor's (V I S Jayabalan) decision, only to come out successful in the end. The mentor now begins to plot against his ward and much later, the ward takes revenge against his guru.

Telugu: 'Dookudu'

Director: Sreenu Vaitla

Cast: Mahesh Babu, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kota Srinivasa Rao and Sonu Sood

A kind-hearted politician meets with a fatal accident but survives. Many years later, his son who is a police officer, vows revenge against those who conspired against his father.

Malayalam: 'Urumi'

Director: Santosh Sivan

Cast: Prithviraj, Prabhu Deva, Genelia, Vidya Balan

A historical-fantasy film, 'Urumi' recounts the tale of warrior clans of northern Kerala in the 16th century. One of the warriors, Kelu Nayanar, leads the epic mission against Vasco da Gama, who appears to have caused the death of innocent women and children.

Kannada: 'Aptha'

Director: Sanjeev Kumar

Cast: Pooja Gandhi, Neeraj Sham

The heroine, a village belle, goes to the city to study medicine, only to be bullied by her classmates (all girls) and in the process gets killed. Her lover swearing revenge kills all four, one by one.
