A special team of the city police has come under the scanner of the State Intelligence Wing for allegedly accepting bribes, in cash and kind, from two gangs in exchange for letting them off in cases of rape and theft.
As per the intelligence wing report, which has already been submitted to its head office in Chennai, the four sub-inspectors and a constable allegedly helped the accused escape criminal charges in two different cases.“The team collected Rs 10 lakh from a gang involved in raping women travelling alone on the Sivathaipatti- Reddiarpatti Road during the evening hours,” an Intelligence source said.
Recently, a woman from Moolaikaraipatti village lodged a complaint with the Palayamkottai police, claiming that three months ago, a four-member masked gang snatched her chain and attempted to rape her when she, along with some relatives, was on her way back home from Tirunelveli.
Based on the information provided by the woman, a special police team investigating the case secured the accused, the source said.
A subsequent investigation revealed that the gang had allegedly raped several women during the evening hours in a similar manner.
However, many of these women did not prefer police complaints fearing the stigma attached to rape victims.“After securing the gang, the special team assured the complainant that they would place them all under arrest. But two days later, they told her that the gang members were innocent, “ said the source.
The Intelligence wing investigation further revealed that this was not the first time the special police team accepted a bribe. They apparently received a vehicle from a Valiyoor-based gang involved in chain snatching cases in Tirunelveli city to help them escape the law.
When Express contacted City Police Commissioner Karuna Sagar, he said he did not receive any complaint against the police personnel attached to the special unit.
However, an investigation would be launched to probe the allegations made against them, the CoP assured.
