Cyclone Alert Issued in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh for Two Days

Chennai: A cyclone alert has been issued by the Met department for north Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh for the next two days. The area has been receiving heavy rainfall for the past days day due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal.

With the depression over Southwest Bay Of Bengal has moved nearly northwards, the Met department issued the cyclone alert on Wednesday. The system is likely to move north-northeastwards and intensify into a deep depression during next 24 hours and further into a cyclonic storm in the next 48 hours.

Heavy rains are likely at a few places in Tamil Nadu and Kerala too. The Met department has advised the fishermen not to venture into the sea along the Tamil Nadu coast.

Chennai has already recorded 101 mm rainfall since Tuesday.

The Met department has asked people to stay indoors. All District Collectors have been advised to take precautionary measures and senior civil servants asked to visit those districts which are expected to receive heavy rainfall.

A call centre to address rain-related grievances has been set up by the Tamil Nadu government. "For all kinds of rain related grievances, the Control Room No 1070 may be contacted," an official release from the Commissioner of Revenue Administration said.

Chennai is experiencing the heaviest rainfall in May in the last five years, and the heaviest since the 2015 floods.

Rains had also affected the voter turnout during the Assembly elections on Monday in some places in Chennai and South Tamil Nadu.
