A 5-year-old boy from Bengaluru slipped into coma and continues to be so even after a week post an operation that was performed to fix his injured fingers.
Lakshay P, aged 5, hurt his fingers while playing at his desk inside his school classroom on June 10.
Lakshay's father Purushottam, who works in a printing press unit near Sultanpet, received a call from his son's teacher.
Reportedly, Purushottam was told that Lakshay had injured his fingers and required urgent medical intervention for which the child had to be taken to Mallya hospital.
"His ring finger and middle finger of the left hand were injured. Doctors said his ring finger could not be saved and his middle finger needed plastic surgery," Purushottam recalled.
The surgery reportedly cost Purushottam Rs 60,000 as it had to be performed within six hours.
Purushottam said he intially deposited Rs 25,000 and waited for the surgeon for more than 30 minutes.
According to reports, Lakshay was taken to the operation theatre around 4pm.
Purushottam was told that the surgery would take 10-15 minutes. But he received no news for the next two hours.
"The doctor who came out of the operation theatre said he had slipped into a coma and his lungs had to be punctured to save him. We were stunned," Purushottam who was shell shocked later revealed.
At 10.30pm, the parents were asked by the doctors to shift Lakshay to Manipal Hospital citing lack of advanced healthcare facilities to save him.
"We shifted him immediately. It's been a week. My son is on ventilator since then," Purushottam said.
Post the incident, Karnataka government has ordered a probe.
