At least seven persons were killed and two injured in the nor'wester that swept through Kolkata and five other south Bengal districts on Monday evening.

Kolkata: At least seven persons were killed and two injured in the nor'wester that swept through Kolkata and five other south Bengal districts on Monday evening uprooting trees, telephone and power poles and causing serious disruption to train services at Howrah and Sealdah sections.

One person was killed when a house collapsed at Chetla lock gate area in southern part of the metropolis while another was electrocuted at Behala area, police sources here said.

Two persons died after a tree fell on them near the district magistrate's bungalow at Barasat in north 24-parganas district during the storm, police said. A Durgapur report said two boys were killed after being struck by lightning inside their house during thunderstorm at Laudaha village in Bardhaman district.

One person was killed at Sankrail in Howrah district when a wall collapsed on him, district Superintendent of Police Akhil Roy said.

One person was injured at Domjur in a wall collapse while another received injury at Bantra, also in Howrah district, when he was trapped under an uprooted tree. Train services at both Howrah and Sealdah sections were affected due to power failure and snapping of overhead connection. Many passengers were stranded.
