In India, at least 19 people die ‘every hour’ in road accidents said Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan while participating in Sadak Suraksha Abhiyaan season 2. He added that a small effort can bring about a huge impact.

“Without empathy, nothing can be done. Till we don’t feel empathetic towards each other, our roads will not be safe. One mistake can end up destroying a whole family, we have to be very careful,” he said.

Other than him, various personalities including Nitin Gadkari, R Madhavan, Pankaj Tripathi, and Rishabh Pant, spoke widely about the issue of road accidents in the country.

Emphasising the importance of ‘Sadak Suraksha Abhiyaan’, actor R Madhvan pointed out that even though the “roadways in the country have become much more efficient and people have become used to roads not being dangerous in terms of a fast-moving vehicle but over a period of time we need to brush up our driving skills” to ensure safety.

We need to inculcate awareness and also instil fear related to road safety in youngsters, said the 3 Idiots actor.

“It breaks my heart when I know about families being destroyed in road accidents, that is how I decided to be a part of the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan, said actor Pankaj Tripathi.

Actor Gurmeet Choudhary recalls how his father met with a road accident some 15 years ago. “My family says that helping others is my priority, that’s why I jump in to help others be it CPR,” said the actor.

Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari emphasised helping people who have been in a road accident saying if we don’t help others, no one will help us.

“I have always believed where there is a will there is a way. I like people who get things done,” Gadkari said, adding that if people will respect and follow the law, their behaviour will gradually change.

“Efforts are being made to raise road safety awareness, change is happening,” he added.

Sadak Suraksha Abhiyaan is a public service awareness campaign, in association with the Ministry of Road, Transport & Highway and Save Life Foundation, to raise awareness around road safety and reduce the number of preventable accidents.

The campaign aims to evoke responsibility amongst the masses and encourage citizens to demonstrate responsible behaviour on the roads.

The 2024 edition of the event focusses on cultivating empathy behind the wheel, aiming to produce positive behaviour changes by sensitising citizens to the value of every life and rewarding safe driving practices to create a culture of respect and responsibility on roads.
