Justice L Narasimha Reddy of the High Court on Friday admitted a writ petition filed by SC and ST students, who took admission in nursing colleges under the management quota, complaining that the government had refused to give them post-matric scholarships.
Petitioner’s counsel DL Pandu said the state government had taken a stand that the scholarships would be given only to students admitted under the convener quota though the central government did not make such distinction.
He requested the court to suspend the state government’s proceedings (refusing to sanction scholarships) launched on August 17 and to direct the authorities to sanction post-matric scholarships to SC and ST students concerned with retrospective effect from 2010-11.
The judge asked the state and central governments to file counter affidavits and adjourned the matter for next hearing to the second week of December.
