New Delhi: Controversial self-styled godman Asaram is not only facing trouble for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl but even his ashrams are under the radar for alleged land encroachment.
After Asaram's ashram in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwada and Gujarat's Surat, the one in Karol Bagh in Delhi is in trouble. The Delhi government is planning to demolish the Karol Bagh ashram.
The Karol Bagh ashram is spread over 800 hectares and has been constructed in the ridge area. No construction is allowed in the ridge area and according to the Forest Department, Asaram's ashram is illegal. The Forest Department also says that the ashram is on government land and the state government has written to the Urban Development Ministry for a green signal to act against the ashram.
Even the MCD has issued a notice to the ashram for not paying property tax since 2004. According to the MCD Act all religious places are exempt from paying property tax but the condition being that the building should not be used for commercial purpose.
But the MCD team found that Asaram's ashram was indulging in commercial activities and selling books and medicines. So under the Act the organisation must pay property tax.
Not only has Asaram's ashram been issued notices, but even the Forest Department written to the Urban Development Ministry five times between 2010 and 1012 but till now there has been no action.
