Coming back to the biggest stage of World football after 32 years, Australia will be hoping for a better performance than the one they had dished out in the 1974 edition.

New Delhi: The team from Down Under will return to the Germany, the scene of their last FIFA World Cup finals appearance in 1974.

Australia had to wait for 32 years to qualify for the World Cup finals and they beat a spirited challenge by Uruguay 4-2 on penalities in the second leg of the intercontinental play-off at Sydney's Telstra Stadium to book their ticket to Germany.

Coached by Dutchman Guus Hiddink, who led Korea Republic to the semi-finals of the last FIFA World Cup™, the Soccerros showed the world that they improving by leaps and bounds.

Hiddink became a legend in Korea Republic after steering Korea Republic to an unlikely semi-final spot at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

The Socceroos have a big presence in Europe with Schwarzer, Lucas Neill, Tim Cahill, Mark Viduka, Craig Moore, Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton all currently plying in the English Premier League.

Aloisi and Bresciano are in Spain and Italy respectively.

In 1974 Australia were grouped along with Chile, German DR and Germany FR and had a miserable time failing to score a single goal.
