Azfal plea has social cost: Delhi govt
The Delhi Government is considering the "social aspect" involved in the mercy petition of Mohammad Afzal.

New Delhi: There could be some relief for Parliament attack accused Mohammad Afzal Guru because the Delhi Government is now considering the "social aspect" involved his mercy petition.

“Once the mercy petition is filed, the social aspect of the case gets increased. These are serious matters and we are taking into consideration the social aspect in the case,” Delhi Chief Secretary R Narayanaswami was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry has sought the Delhi government's comments on the mercy petition of Afzal after President A P J Abdul Kalam referred the matter to it.

But Narayanaswami, refused to reveal the nature of the questions put forward by the Ministry.

When the Chief Secretary was told that the petition was pending with the Delhi Government since October last year, he said, “such issues can not be wished away in a hurry”.

Last week, the Supreme Court dismissed Afzal’s curative petition that he filed on December 13, 2006.

Kalam had forwarded Afzal's mercy petition to the Home Ministry which in turn send it to the Union Law Ministry and the Delhi Government to ascertain their views before it gives the advise to the President.
