BANGALORE: The name boards indicating the street or layout names are not only useful for the residents of the areas concerned but also helpful for outsiders to locate without any hassles the address of the houses they wish to visit. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has been spending considerable money to put up name boards indicating the names of the crosses, streets and layouts for the benefit of the people. These boards also have the names of the corporator of the ward and the MLA of the respective Assembly constituency. For the last 10 years, there were no problems for the residents as well as the visitors of Kamadhenu Nagar in Devasandra ward as far as information about the name of streets and crosses or even the locality was concerned. The BBMP had put up boards indicating the name of the locality as Kamadhenu Nagar. However, a landlord in the area has decided to change the name of the layout to ‘Dodda Thayappa Badavane’ from Kamadhenu Nagar. “Our passports and driving licences have Kamadhenu Nagar as our locality. Now, Thayappa, supported by goondas, is indulging in mischief. He has changed the name of Kamadhenu Nagar to Dodda Thayappa Badavane on the name boards,” said Manohar, a resident of Kamadhenu Nagar. The residents are quite miffed on the whole affair unfolding this way.It was alleged that Thayappa, a landlord, had threatened to block one of the roads in Kamadhenu Nagar (Survey no.190/4C and 189/1) recently when the residents complained to Manjula Devi, the corporator of Devasandra Ward. “Thayappa came with a bunch of rowdies to our locality to threaten us. He had attempted to block the road by parking a few of his vehicles. I want the police and the BBMP authorities to take a strict action against the person for not only terrorising the residents but also changing the name of the locality on the name boards,” said a resident on the condition of anonymity.Many residents complain that Thayappa indulges in such activities by misusing his association with the BJP leaders. “He claims to be an acolyte of corporator Manjula Devi and MLA Nandish Reddy. He wants to name the locality after his grand-father Dodda Thayappa. We do not know Dodda Thayappa’s credentials. Is he a martyr or freedom fighter?” asks a resident. Meanwhile, Manjula Devi, the corporator, has said that it was true that Thayappa had attempted to change the name boards of Kamadhenu Nagar. “I have advised him not to do so. I have also directed the assistant executive engineer to re-write the name of Kamadhenu Nagar on the name boards that were tampered with so that life can be as normal as it was,” says Manjula Devi. Will the assistant executive engineer of Devasandra ward take measures to re-write the name of the locality as Kamadhenu Nagar on the name boards? The residents have to wait and watch.
