Bengal Locals Not Happy With Hilsa Fish Quality This Year
Hilsa fish tastes best when it comes from the sea to fresh water for breeding.

Hilsa fish is one of the most popular and sought-after foods in the Indian subcontinent. It is the national fish of Bangladesh and the state fish of West Bengal. During the monsoon season, Hilsa is one of the most bought fishes in West Bengal. It is sold at high prices during this season. Tons of Hilsa fish are caught in various fishing centres of the West Bengal state including Digha. This year, Hilsa fish has disappointed the people of Bengal. Several consumers have complained that the desired taste of Hilsa Fish is missing in the current stock.

From small to large Hilsa fishes, the Bengalis have been complaining of a missing taste. In this regard, a Hilsa-loving Bengali claimed that the Hilsa fish aroma is so fulfilling that when it is cooked in someone’s house, the whole neighbourhood would know about it. The smell of fried Hilsa fish increases hunger, said one of the residents of West Bengal. This year the same aroma is missing. As per experts, Hilsa fish tastes best when it comes from the sea to fresh water for breeding. The taste of Hilsa mainly depends on where the fish is caught from.

Currently, most hilsa fish are caught in river and sea estuaries or shallow seas. As a result, hilsa fish are being caught before coming from the sea to the river for reproduction. Due to this, fatty acids are not produced in the body of Hilsa. Pollution can also be considered as one of the major factors for the missing taste in Hilsa fish this year.

Apart from being a food item, it is also used as a gift in the Bengali wedding. During various rituals, the Bengali Hindu and Bengali Muslim family of the groom presents a pair of Hilsa fish to the family of the bride.
