New Delhi: Biopics are the latest fad in Bollywood. The success of Tigmanshu Dhulia's 'Paan Singh Tomar' has given impetus to such films. It's not the first time the Hindi film industry has focussed on biopics. V Shantaram had come up with 'Dr Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani' in 1946 only. Filmmakers such as Ketan Mehta and Shyam Benegal made films like 'Sardar', 'Mangal Pandey-The Rising', and 'Bose-The Forgotten Hero' in recent times.
Some films were critically appreciated too for their authenticity. Rajkumar Santoshi's 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh' and Milan Luthria's 'The Dirty Picture' are among those films.
If media reports are to be believed then Shah Rukh Khan is also planning to feature as the legendry hockey player Dhyan Chand in a forthcoming biopic.
Similarly, Farhan Akhtar is also in the news for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's biopic 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'. The film is based on the renowned athlete Milkha Singh. The media is full of reports about Farhan Akhtar's preparation for the role. If on location photographs are to be taken as evidences then Farhan is leaving no stone unturned to make his character look authentic.
It was not long ago when Irrfan was in the news for similar reasons. His preparation for the character of 'Paan Singh Tomar' was equally tough. He said this in an interview given to IBNLive," There was no document about Paan Singh. It took me a long time to get the idea registered. This is one role I want to keep with me forever, the way he felt, his passion, the story of a simple man and what he did for his country."
He further said," Shooting in May-June in Rajasthan and Bihar was not easy. By lunch break everyone's tongue would hang out in the heat. I had a great buzz going."
Playing an athlete on screen may seem simple but getting the body language right is definitely not easy. An athlete's character is very different than usual characters. One can't get the feelings correct without going through the same rigorous training that the athletes do everyday.
Shah Rukh Khan played a gritty hockey coach in 'Chak De India' where he needed to play the game too. He looked satisfactory in those scenes. He confessed in his interviews later that his experience of playing hockey at the school level helped him a lot in achieving the exact gestures of a hockey player.
Now, it's Farhan Akhtar's turn to get the mannerism right and that makes all his efforts worth doing.
Farhan himself is a director and thus he knows the importance of appearance. We can only hope that he will pass this test with flying colours and 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' will emerge as a believable biopic.
