Alleging corruption and laxity in the implementation of relief works, a BJP delegation on Wednesday met Uttar Pradesh Governor B L Joshi and requested him to ensure adequate compensation for flood-affected people in various parts of the state.
Led by party state president Laxmi Kant Bajpai, the BJP delegation submitted a memoradum to the Governor and requested that the relief be provided to the flood victims without any discrimination. The flood situation remains grim in Uttar Pradesh with swollen rivers inundating vast tracts of land at various parts of the state, especially in the eastern region.
Bajpai demanded that a compensation of Rs 20 lakh each should be given to the kin of people killed in rains and floods, and that debts and taxes of farmers in the affected areas be waived off. He demanded that compensation should also be paid for loss of agricultural produce and other properties.
Bajpai said the Governor should call secretaries of relief and revenue departments and take stock of the flood relief works, besides directing the government to take action against officials found wanting in discharging their duties. He alleged that despite being aware of the fact that floods wreak havoc in various parts of the state every year, the government did not take concrete measures to deal with the natural calamity.
