New Delhi: Two persons died and 11 were injured when a bomb planted by suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants exploded in a crowded market in Guwahati on Wednesday.
The bomb was hidden in a vegetable carton and exploded at 1850 hours IST in the wholesale vegetable market in Ganeshguri.
The market is near the high-security Dispur complex where the offices of Chief minister, the Assembly and state secretariat are located.
A PTI report said blast site was spattered with blood and broken glass of windows. Intelligence sources had earlier warned of possible attacks by the banned ULFA in lower Assam following army operations against its cadres in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Sibsagar districts in the upper part of the state.
The attack came a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited areas where the ULFA killed 70 migrant workers.
Today's blast near the capital complex was reminiscent of another bombing by the ULFA at the entrance gate of Dispur police station on January 8, in which two policemen were critically injured.
Earlier in the day, the banned group struck in Goalpara district of lower Assam, exploding a bomb near the circuit house at Bhalukdobi at noon though there were no casualties.
