Calcutta High Court restrains annual event in Maidan; Subhas Chakraborty says he will go after greens.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday restrained the organisers of the Kolkata Book Fair at the Maidan in the city.

The court said Publishers and Booksellers Guild had obtained the army’s permission to hold the event from January 31 by deceiving authorities. The matter will be heard again on January 29.

Hours after the order, West Bengal Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty said he would start an agitation if the fair, the organisers of which have been restrained from was “disrupted”.

"I want to say that if the fair is obstructed from being held on the Maidan, a large number of book lovers, book sellers and people will go there and read books as a token of protest. Reading books will certainly not cause environmental pollution. The date and time will be announced later," he told PTI.

Chakraborty said if the fair is not held he would protest outside the homes of environmental activists who had moved the court "I am finding out their names and addresses."

Chakraborty said he expected the High Court to allow the fair and claimed the Supreme Court had ruled in 1926 that the City Police Commission’s was the Maidan’s custodian.
