New Delhi: Government owned telecom giant BSNL's employees are striking work on Wednesday to protest the delay in awarding deal for expanding the company's GSM network.
The BSNL union demands that the DoT should give a written assurance on its demands of placing the contract for laying 45.5 million GSM lines should be placed to the selected vendors.
While telecommunication services will not to be affected because of the strike, maintenance and repair work will definitely take a hit.
BSNL's mega GSM tender for a little over 45 million GSM lines ran into trouble as the new communications and IT minister A Raja felt it was being awarded at a very high price.
Raja has now asked BSNL to look into the possibility of reducing the tender size or go in for fresh financial bids.
"Strike started at 0600 hours. Workers of all the associations, unions are on strike. The strike is a complete success," PTI quoted joint convener of BSNL and MTNL employees’ forum V A N Namboodiri as saying.
BSNL has 3.5 crore fixed lines and 2.4 crore mobile subscribers and is the largest telecom operator with operations in regions except Mumbai and Delhi.
The problem of the PSU is expected to be compounded with this strike as it struggles to increase its GSM capacity through tenders, which has been mired in controversies and delays.
