HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has urged governor ESL Narasimhan to use his office and see that the government cancel the bauxite mining leases given to private firms in Visakhapatnam Agency area.A TDP delegation led by opposition leader in the Legislative Council Dadi Veerabhadra Rao submitted a memorandum to governor to this effect on Saturday. In its fourpage memorandum to the governor which was signed by TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu, the TDP leaders stated that the bauxite mining in Visakhapatnam Agency area was in violation of provisions of the Forest Rights Act and Samata judgment. The mining lease would have adverse impact on the environment and render lakhs of tribals jobless in their native places, the memo stated. It also urged the governor to order a CBI probe into the mining leases. The TDP alleged that the state government gave bauxite mining leases to two MNCs at throwaway prices. This was nothing but looting natural wealth to favour a few, the memo contended."How can the environmental clearances be revived in Visakhapatnam agency when the same was rescinded in Nyamgiri of Orissa after assurance by Rahul Gandhi? When bauxite mining in Nyamgiri is found to be affecting environment how is it different in Visakha agency?" the TDP asked.
