BHUBANESWAR: The large number of visitors to the OUAT Veterinary Grounds  here were treated to a high-calibre dog show in which exotic and rare breeds were displayed by their proud owners on Sunday. The 41st and 42nd dog shows held under the auspices of Orissa Kennel Club (OKC) drew overwhelming response from dog breeders, dog lovers and public. Around 198 dogs of 35 high breeds, including Belgian Shephard, Cocker Spaniel, Great Dane, Doberman, Neopolitan Mastiff, Akita, Rudisian Ridgeback, Dalmatian, Tibetan Mastiff, English Pointer, Pekingese, Rottweiler, Chihuahua and Labrador made their presence felt. The dogs taking part in the events had to be registered under the Kennel Club of India (KCI) as part of the eligibility criterion. Secretary of OKC Subrat Ranjan Prusty said, “The dogs were judged according to their obedience, looks and agility. Over  the years, this dog show has become very popular and this  year dog owners from places like Bengaluru, Chennai, New Delhi and Visakhapatnam participated.” The judges, appointed by the KCI, were CV Sudarsan, Larry Yuen and CR Patnaik. The breeds were first judged individually. After this, the best of the breed (both male and female) competed at the group level. The group winners competed with each other for the top eight honours in each show. The title for the Best Dog In Show for the 41st and 42nd dog show went to two Dobermans from Bengaluru while an Akita from Bhubaneswar and Beagle from Kolkata swept the best puppy awards, respectively. Sudarsan, who is also the secretary of the KCI, said each breed would have distinct characteristics and the jury looked for how well the dogs matched these aspects.
