BANGALORE: If you are thinking that BBMP is cash -strapped, check this. It has savings accounts in as many as 535 banks. With all these accounts, the civic body is still struggling to get the complete details of the funds available.While the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) report which was tabled in Legislative Assembly on Wednesday revealed that Rs 1,065 crore was lying in 165 bank accounts without transferring it to the nodal bank account, the number of banks details were revealed by the CID team. According to official sources in CID, when they visited the BBMP office on Wednesday, they asked the officials to submit the details of transaction of funds for the past three years. “It was then we got to know that BBMP has 535 bank accounts. This includes both cooperative banks as well as nationalised banks. Some of them are existing for the past 40 years,” an official said.Further, the official said that they are estimating the funds stashed in these accounts. Adding to this, a senior BBMP official said that they were aware that BBMP had too many bank accounts. But did not know that there are more than 500 accounts. “CAG has just revealed the number of bank accounts where transaction is taking place. But there are many such accounts. There are no transactions in these accounts,” he said.Explaining further, the official said that there is not even minimum balance in many accounts. “This is one of the reasons for cheque bounce cases in BBMP. This is also creating problems for us when we want to spend money. We did not know from which bank we could draw money,” the official added.The BBMP official said that former Commissioner Siddaiah who was aware of these too many bank accounts had suggested to have only two accounts, one for giving salary to the employees and other for developmental works. Commissioner M K Shankaralinge Gowda said that they have a proposal to have just 2 accounts - one of payment and another for recipients.
