Allegations of corruption have cast a shadow over the integrity of Delhi Police, challenging their proclaimed clean image. Recent investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have uncovered a disturbing trend where some officers allegedly accept a partial bribe payment upfront, followed by the remainder in installments. Over the past two years, instances of corruption within the capital’s law enforcement have reportedly risen, raising significant concerns among the public and authorities alike. The CBI’s scrutiny has raised questions about whether Delhi Police officers are indeed resorting to a structured bribe collection method resembling consumer finance.

Sources familiar with the investigation reveal a cautious approach among the accused officers when discussing financial transactions. Suspecting potential surveillance such as wiretaps or hidden cameras, officers reportedly exercise extreme caution to avoid detection by investigative agencies. The revelations have triggered a fresh debate on the efficacy of current anti-corruption measures within the Delhi Police, with calls for stringent reforms to restore public trust in law enforcement agencies.

A recent raid conducted by the CBI at the Patparganj police station in East Delhi unearthed a shocking case of corruption involving two head constables. The accused officers were apprehended while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000. The incident unfolded when the officers allegedly extorted Rs 50,000 from a woman trader under the pretext of accusing her of selling stolen mobile phones. Following negotiations, the officers demanded an initial payment of Rs 11,000 as a ‘down payment’, with the remainder to be paid in monthly installments (EMIs).

During the raid, a sub-inspector was apprehended for allegedly accepting a bribe in installments. According to CBI, the accused sub-inspector initially demanded a bribe of Rs 3 lakh from a complainant. However, after negotiations, the amount was reduced to Rs 2 lakh. The officer purportedly threatened to arrest the complainant under special circumstances unless a bribe of Rs 2 lakh was paid in installments. In a meticulously planned operation, the CBI laid a trap and arrested the sub-inspector red-handed while receiving the first installment of Rs 1 lakh from the complainant.

Recently, a police sub-inspector allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 25 lakh from a complainant involved in a legal dispute. The accused officer instructed the complainant to make an initial down payment of Rs 5 lakh, with the remainder to be paid in installments. However, following the intervention of the CBI, the situation took a dramatic turn. Acting swiftly on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and apprehended the sub-inspector red-handed while accepting an EMI installment of Rs 4.5 lakh.

During a recent raid on the policemen of the Narcotics Cell of North Delhi, serious allegations emerged against officers, alleging that the police personnel conducted a thorough search of a complainant, suspecting him of carrying listening and recording devices. According to CBI, an individual equipped with a recording device was purportedly sent to engage with the officers. Despite their efforts to ensure the person was not wired, the officers failed to apprehend the individual. Subsequently, suspicions escalated, leading to the alleged kidnapping of the complainant. The complainant was forcibly taken into custody and reportedly paraded through the city for several hours. After being subjected to threats, he was eventually released and abandoned on the roadside.

Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora pledged swift action to apprehend several absconding officers amidst a significant rise in corruption cases within the Delhi Police over the past two years.
