CBI to extradite Tiger Memon's aide
CBI has initiated extradition proceedings in the UAE against Tiger Memon's aide Taher Taklya.

Mumbai: Boosted by conviction of 100 of the 123 accused tried in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case, the Central Bureau of Investigation, the prosecuting agency, has initiated extradition proceedings in the United Arab Emirates against Taher Taklya, alleged to be an accomplice of prime absconding accused Tiger Memon, a CBI official said on Monday.

"The proceedings have been initiated and we are following up with the UAE authorities," deputy inspector general O P Chatwal said.

CBI have so far arrested 25 of more than 50 absconding accused in the case and efforts to catch the remaining 27 are under way, he added.

Extradition of Abu Salem from Portugal in November, last year, was successfully accomplished by the CBI, Chatwal said. Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon are among the 27 who are still evading arrest in the case.

Declared proclaimed offenders, CBI, however, managed to get red corner notices issued against them by Interpol, the international police agency. The properties of the absconding accused have been attached, he added. Expressing satisfaction over 80 per cent convictions in the 1993 blasts case, Chatwal said it is more than the usual conviction rate of less than 70 per cent secured by the central agency.

Altogether 257 people were killed and 713 wounded in the multiple bomb explosions which rocked the country's financial and entertainment capital on March 12, 1993.
