Goa govt buckles under pressure as state police draw flak for botching up the investigation.

New Delhi: Buckling to mounting opposition pressure and media glare, the Goa government on Wednesday transferred the Scarlette Keeling murder case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

This comes after Chief Minister Digamber Kamat said on March 25 that his government was willing to hand over British teenager’s case to the investigating body.

On Monday, the National Commission for Women (NCW) too came down heavily on the Goa police, accusing them of misleading authorities and public with their findings in the case.

After a fact-finding tour, a two-member team of the Commission blamed the police of trying to destroy evidence in the matter.

“Police were trying to hush up the investigation from the beginning by calling the body as 'unknown' in spite of knowing that the body is of Scarlette. They demolished Lui shack because they did not want to leave any clue to the agencies like us who will come to enquire,” NCW member Nirmala Venkatesh said in a press conference.

The state’s main Opposition party BJP on March 20 had demanded a CBI probe into the case as well as the flourishing drug trade in the coastal state, alleging political patronage in the matter.

"Every passing day, new revelations are made by the media. The state (Goa) police inevitably works under political pressure. There is no other alternative than a CBI inquiry into the entire episode," BJP's legislature party spokesman Damodar Naik said.

Commenting on the death of the British girl, the BJP leader said the Home Minister, instead of probing into Fiona's allegations, has unleashed personal vendetta on her.

Fiona had demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of her daughter Scarlett Eden Keeling, who was found dead on Goa's popular Anjuna beach on February 18.
