Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi starrer Merry Christmas was finally released in theatres on January 12. The crime thriller is getting a lot of praise from fans. The onscreen chemistry between Katrina and Vijay Sethupathi has left all their fans in awe. However, recently in an interview with Brut, the actor opened up about the surprising reactions he received when he announced that he would be sharing the screen with Bollywood diva Katrina Kaif in Merry Christmas. Vijay Sethupathi disclosed that the surprise pairing prompted some shocked responses.
He went on to say that many thought he would be seen in a guest role. “I was shocked because everybody had that question. When I first told them that I am doing a Sriram Raghavan sir’s film, they said, “okay, very good, superb!” And (then I said) I am doing it with Katrina Kaif, so they said, ‘Is yours a guest role? Is it a heroine centric film?’. Everybody knows Katrina. It was a shock for me also. Like how is it going to be in the film, everybody’s asking, ‘how is this pair on screen?’. The same way I also have that fear and the doubt,” The Indian Express quoted his statement.
Besides Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi, Merry Christmas also features Sanjay Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Pratima Kannan, Tinnu Anand, Radhika Sarathkumar, Shanmugaraja, Kevin Jay Babu, Rajesh Williams, and Pari. Ashwini Kalsekar and Radhika Apte are also seen in cameos in the film. It is directed by Sriram Raghavan and is released in Hindi and Tamil.
News18 Showsha’s review of the film reads, “Merry Christmas is not racy or pacy but is appropriately pulpy. It is a fantastic way to kick off 2024 and a welcome break from the monotonous, action entertainers and spy thrillers that we saw last year.”
As reported by industry tracker Sacnilk.com, early estimates suggest that Merry Christmas earned Rs 2.55 Cr in India (net) on its opening day across all languages. Reportedly, the film had an overall occupancy of 11.56 per cent in Hindi areas. While morning shows saw an occupancy of 6.81 per cent, it increased to a little over 18 per cent during the night shows. Mumbai and the National Capital Region (NCR) saw the maximum occupancy for Merry Christmas with 12.75 per cent and 8.50 per cent respectively.
