CHENNAI: Adhering to their leader’s appeal, the cadre and functionaries of the AIADMK on Friday celebrated the 64th birthday of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa by extending welfare assistance to the needy and offering prayers at places of worship across the State. At the AIADMK headquarters, party organising secretary Visalakshi Nedunchezhiyan cut a 64-kg cake and distributed it to ministers, senior functionaries and cadre who thronged the office to celebrate the birthday. She also released a souvenir to mark the birthday and P Venugopal, party’s medical wing secretary received the first copy. Party cadre burst crackers too.Since Jayalalithaa spent her day at Siruthavur on Friday, there was less crowd at her Poes Garden residence here. However, party leaders and representatives of the women’s wing thronged the house with bouquets and messages. In a letter to the party cadre ahead of the birthday, Jayalalithaa had recalled that her mentor and AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran had never celebrated his birthday or met any one on the day. Jayalalithaa had appealed to the cadre not to try to meet her on February 24. A week ago, the AIADMK functionaries in all districts had released a list of welfare measures for the poor. The welfare assistance given to the poor include sarees, dhotis, tri-cycles to the differently-abled, uniforms to autorickshaw drivers, equipment for construction workers and visually impaired, sewing machines to women and water filter and fans to the noon-meal centres, among others. In Chennai, special prayers were offered in many temples, churches and mosques by cadre.  Jayalalithaa presided over mass weddings of 64 couples, organised by the Jayalalithaa Peravai on February 19. Since then, AIADMK cadre started celebrations by way of charitable activities like organising ‘Annadanam’ (poor feeding), blood donation and medical camps. In many places, the party workers organised oratorical competitions for students.
