Chief Minister Oommen Chandy flayed the Opposition for unleashing a ‘smear

campaign’ against the upcoming ‘Emerging Kerala’ conclave without taking part

in a single meeting held at the instance of the government to discuss the issue.

Promising

that the government will be open to any fair criticism raised by any quarter

including the media on the event and will examine them in detail, Chandy

asserted that it was not only the ‘Green Brigade’ UDF MLAs who have raised

issues relating to environment but also other people’s representatives, who

have however desisted from openly airing them.

“All

are convinced about the intention and objectives of the government while going

ahead with the Emerging Kerala initiative,” he said, replying to queries of

mediapersons in a post-cabinet briefing on Monday. “Can any project be

implemented in the state without addressing environment issues properly?’’ he

asked.

Chandy

said that not even a single cent of land will be sold to anyone in the name of

‘Emerging Kerala’. “Land will be given on lease after ensuring adequate lease

rent. In the case of private land, full market value and also the package

announced by the Revenue Department and ensuring future returns based on

appreciation of land price will be there,” he said.

He

said that the Paddyfield and Wetland Conservation Act will not be torpedoed in

the name of development. “The Opposition should desist from raising

non-existent issues. We are ready for discussions with anyone to clear doubts. The

government is transparent in its approach on revenue land and environment

issues,” he claimed.Asked

why Congress MLAs who are espousing ‘Green Politics’ are not convinced, Chandy

retorted whether there was anything divergent in the views of the MLAs with

that of the government on land and eco issues.

“Neither

these MLAs nor V M Sudheeran would join the Opposition and array against the

well-meaning initiatives of the UDF Government,” Chandy claimed. “Already,

delegations from 52 countries have assured their participation in the event,”

he noted.“The

agricultural sector should be strengthened. All other sectors are secondary to

it. When the Coconut Development Board chairman made a presentation in front of

the cabinet on the scope of value addition and how other countries are cashing

in on this with around 100 products recently, we felt ashamed,” he said.
