Delhi has become the first state to implement the programme. The chief minister distributed the food grains to the females at Lakshmibai Nagar, South Kidwai Nagar, Krishnamenon Marg and Sangli apartment, Copernicus Marg in New Delhi District.
The distribution programme was overlooked by MLAs of the respective segments. The city government had initially identified 32 lakh persons from the BPL, AAY. JJC and RCRC card holders. The process of reaching out to the remaining 41 lakh persons is on and they are being issued the new food security cards.
Dikshit stated that her government is committed to cover all 73 lakh persons under the Food security programme by January next year as the parameters for identification of the beneficiaries have been meticulously finalised. She described the programme as one of the largest in the world. The 67 percent population of the country is to be covered to provide them the legal right to food.
