Heaving a sigh of relief, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said the Central government’s decision to restore gas supply of 2 million metric standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD) to Andhra Pradesh will enable power producers to generate over 400 mw of electricity.

“The government of India’s decision will certainly allay industry’s fears of further power cuts,” said Suchitra Ella, the chairperson of the AP chapter of CII.

Though the state is entitled to get 9.13 MMSCMD of gas as per the guidelines set by an empowered group of ministers (EGoM), it had been recieving only 3.48 MMSCMD. “The diversion of 2 MMSCMD of gas would have aggravated the power crisis in the state,” Ella said.

The CII also suggested long-term, mid-term and short-term measures to overcome the power crisis in the state. For the short-term, CII recommends reduction of VAT on diesel supplied in bulk to industries for power generation to 4 per cent till the scheduled power cuts are lifted.

“Other short-term measures include allowing gas-based power plants based on alternative fuels,” Ella said.

Similarly, for the medium-term, CII urged the government to introduce a renewable energy policy to encourage the use of alternative sources of energy besides commissioning pending power projects on war footing basis to reduce the power deficit. For the long-term, industry must be given incentives to go in for captive power generation, he said.

Lastly, the trade body recommended indepedent allocation of the state’s budget for power infrastructure development.
