Clean-up will be finished by Wednesday: Dikshit
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday gave the assurance that work is on track and all the flats will be handed over by Wednesday.

New Delhi: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday morning met officials from the CWG Organising Committee, the Delhi Development Authority and the Municipal Corporation and said, “Work is on track and I assure that all the cleanliness work will be done. All the flats will be handed over by Wednesday.”

Completion of work in Tower 22 is the most crucial as the South African contingent will arrive on Sunday evening and will occupy this tower, which comprises of 32 flats. Plumbing work and electrical fittings are being checked right now.

Earlier, CNN-IBN had unearthed reports that showed only 1/3 of the flats are completely ready at the Games Village.

Only 409 out of 1168 flats are ready for use. And 43 electricians and 24 plumbers are currently working at the Village.

Also the Games image continue take a beating as athletes continue to pull out. British tennis player Elena Baltacha has pulled out of the Games citing health concerns. She told the Daily Telegraph that she took her decision to not attend the Games after seeing the pathetic condition of the Village in the media.

In addition to all this, water continues to clog the basement of the Games Village, plumbing problems have surfaced and need to be fixed. Forty tonnes of dirt was removed from the Village on Saturday.

Paying close attention to that problem and many others is Delhi's Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. She will be convening a meeting on Sunday at the Commonwealth Games Village in a few hours from now to take stock of the ground situation. The meeting will be attended by officials from the Organising Committee (OC), the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Dikshit told CNN-IBN on Friday that she was confident that Delhi would pull off a successful event.

“What is remaining is basement… it's a cause of little worry but with sunshine I'm hoping it will dry up and lifts will start…There's no point commenting on passing the buck. I'm absolutely confident,” said Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit.

"Some work is still left to be done at the Games village. Water-logging is there in some of the towers that fall in the river bed. The process of pumping out water from there is going on. It should be completed soon. I will be happy and satisfied only after all the work is completed," said Dikshit on the status of work remaining to be completed at the Village.

When asked about Kalmadi's comment that the venues were not handed over in time, Dikshit said, "This is not the time for blaming each other. This is the time to cooperate and work with each other in order to have a successful Commonwealth Games.”
