BANGALORE: Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has directed senior police officers to create an environment that would enable lower rung officers and constabulary to be proactive and sensitive to the needs of the people."The efficacy of the police force and the image of the government are interlinked and depends largely on the conduct, behaviour and performance of the police at the constable level... I want the top officers to work in this direction," Gowda said in his opening remarks at the senior police officers conference here on Saturday.Admitting that the working conditions and environment of the police, especially at the lower level, needs to be improved, the CM said he will discuss the issue in detail in the next few days and work out an action plan to create a humane atmosphere for the police to function professionally.Looking towards city police commissioner Jyoti Prakash Mirji, Gowda said, "See if we can streamline the system of giving weekly offs regularly so that the constabulary spends time with their families."The chief minister also asked officers to keep tab of the activities of forces destablising communal harmony and peace. He assured the police that he would not interfere in the daytoday functioning of the department but would not tolerate lethargy.
