The State Government on Saturday fulfilled one of the long-standing demands of the contractual nurses providing them with an allowance of ` 3,000 per year for uniform.
In his first decision after assuming charge as Finance Minister following ministry reshuffle, Prasanna Acharya announced the hike in uniform allowances for staff nurses along with that of nursing sisters, matrons and assistant matrons while bringing the contractual staff into the fold. The staff nurses were getting ` 1,500 a year each as uniform allowance while nursing sisters, matrons and assistant matrons were being paid ` 1,200 each.
The hike would be effective from this month itself and would benefit more than 2,500 nurses, including around 1,600 contractual ones. Provisioning of uniform allowance was one of the major demands of the contractual nurses, who had resorted to a 12-day strike earlier in July to press for service regularisation and pay parity along with other benefits.
The Government had earlier announced automatic regularisation of the contractual nurses on completion of six years of service.
