Madhya Pradesh: Around 7.15am on Thursday, assistant sub-inspector Vivek Lal received information about the suicide of 36-year-old Laxmi Bai in Madhya Pradesh’s Katni district.
When police reached the house in Badi Khirhani village, she found Laxmi’s body hanging from the roof of the cowshed. What was even more shocking was the sight of a newborn baby girl wrapped around the woman’s legs.
“I have dealt with several cases of hanging but this was unexpected," said sub-inspector Kavita Sahani. “The baby was crying and was entangled around the sari and leg with the (umbilical) cord in situ."
Sahani moved quickly to disentangle the baby, wrap her inside a cloth and call the paramedics. Soon after, the baby was rushed to the Katni district hospital. “The baby has been admitted to the neo-natal intensive care unit," a doctor at the hospital said.
The police are yet to determine the exact cause of the suicide. “We have not been able to take the statement of the family members as they were busy in Laxmi’s cremation," said ASP Lal.
According to police sources, Laxmi’s husband Santosh denied having any dispute with his wife. Santosh claimed that they had both gone to sleep around 9 pm, after watching television.
When he woke up in the morning, Laxmi was missing. Santosh then went out to the cow shed where he found her hanging.
The couple was making a living by growing and selling vegetables. They have four other children, the eldest being a 16-year old girl.
