KOCHI: The police are all set to take action against online lotteries operating from Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam rural and Alappuzha. A meeting attended by IG K Padmakumar and DySPs from Ernakulam rural, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Idukki confirmed that single-digit online lotteries are functioning in the rural parts of many districts.According to highly-placed officials, many banned online lotteries are functioning in rural areas of Idukki and Kottayam districts. “These online lotteries operate by giving buyers a single-digit code, which can be accessed through websites. Gifts are sent to the houses of the recipients or to their bank accounts. “These lotteries had gone underground after the state government banned all kinds of online lotteries in the state.”Another official added that the winning number of these lotteries always comes from unsold tickets. People who have the winning combination are denied their prize and if at all given it will be less than 75 per cent of the actual prize. The IG has directed the police in other districts to strictly monitor and take action against illegal lotteries. He also commended the activities of the Shadow Police in curbing illegal activities within the Ernakulam city limits. The state government had banned online lotteries in the state by listing them under the category of ‘gambling.’ The ban was imposed because it was found that several irregularities were committed by the organisers of online lotteries, including manipulation in printing.
