A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on this between the Maharashtra State Skills University and Bharat Vikas Group was signed in the presence of chief minister Eknath Shinde, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, skill development minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, and BVG officials in Mumbai on February 14. The Maharashtra government’s skill development department has decided to establish the country’s first-ever Swachh Bharat Academy in Thane city near Mumbai, a step in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on a Clean India. The PM made Swachh Bharat Abhiyan a nationwide campaign after initiating it on October 2, 2014, with the aim to eliminate open defecation, improve solid waste management, and increase awareness of menstrual health management.

Keeping in mind the need to develop skilled manpower to avoid a shortage of it in this sector, the skill development department has joined hands with the Bharat Vikas Group. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Maharashtra State Skills University and Bharat Vikas Group was signed in the presence of chief minister Eknath Shinde, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, skill development minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, and BVG officials in Mumbai on February 14.

“A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed today between Maharashtra State Skills University and BVG (Bharat Vikas Group) to establish the country’s first Sant Gadge Baba Swachh Bharat Academy in Thane. This was a step towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of establishing such an academy. The academy offers five seven-day courses and five 30-day courses. The academy is expected to place 3,000 students in jobs each month, with students receiving a minimum monthly salary ranging from Rs 18,000 to Rs 35,000,” said Lodha.

According to the MoU, various certificate, diploma, and degree courses will be taught in the Swachh Bharat Academy. The state government says there is a huge demand for skilled manpower in this sector and there are no institutions that teach the required skills in the entire country.

“PM Modi has given a vision to the country with the initiative of this Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The change can be seen all over the country, but to maintain the pace set by the Prime Minister for this scheme there is a requirement of skilled manpower. Hence, the skill development department of the Maharashtra government has decided to come up with such unique courses, which will help to create skilled manpower in this sector and also open up new avenues for the youth of Maharashtra,” said an official from the department to News18.

The Maharashtra State Skill Development Innovation Society, Directorate of Vocational Education and Training will design the courses and certificate programmes for the Swachh Bharat Academy and will also monitor their implementation.

As stated by Lodha, an official connected with the skill development department initiative confirmed to News18 that this institute will also provide employment opportunities to students who get training here.
