CHENNAI: CPM councillor Devi on Friday claimed that statistics regarding the prevalence of malaria in the civic body's zone II, Basin Bridge were being distorted by authorities at corporation hospitals. She also appealed to Mayor M Subramanian to take immediate steps to save the residents from the mosquito menace prevailing in the area.
"Due to the recent intermittent rains, the mosquito menace has spread like wildfire across the whole Basin Bridge zone. There are reports that the area has recorded many malaria cases in the recent days," the ward 59 councillor said during the monthly council meet."The irony is that the patients, who were given tablets for the disease, were advised by hospital authorities not to disclose it as malaria and instead state that it was normal fever in a bid to underreport its prevalence in the zone," Devi alleged.
