CHENNAI: Many artistes have been gifted with a good sense of music presentation. It helps them take melodious strides, measure the dimensions and explore the ‘Tharasthayi’ to weave enchantment. These thoughts came to my mind when I attended the violin concert of A Kanyakumari for Sri Ranjani Sabha at Swami Auditorium. The profusion of musical forms and the intensity of loveliness in presentation that was redolent of the blessedness at the heart of the great music was clearly evident in her programme.She opened with a Dikshitar Kriti in Raga Bilahari (Eka Thantham Baje) and followed it up with (Sri Parvathi Parameswar) of Dikshitar, in Raga Bowli, adopting an attractive vibrant style.Her exploration of Raga Lalitha, was marked by creative excitement, with mesmerising manipulations. The long drawn swirls were cast in an exhilarating mould. In the swaras, in (Hiranmayim Lakshmi) of Dikshitar, when she displayed a network of prayogas around M-Ma-Da, her flamboyant intrinsic skill came to the fore. She is very original, and it cannot be refuted. She took off to brilliant heights in Ragam-Thanam-Pallavi, combining two ragas of Brindavana Saranga and Valachi and Pallavi Ragamalika in Ragas Kamas and Dwajavanthi, significantly relating to their grace. Earlier, in her presentation of (Marubalka) of Thyagaraja in Raga Sriranjini and (Balakrishnam) of Papanasam Sivan in Raga Dhanyasi, short raga sancharas were meticulously manicured, by clever turn of phrases.She concluded with a divinity ensconced (Govinda-Hari-Govinda).Special mention should be made of Srimushnam Raja Rao (Mridangam), who showed his calibre, responding brilliantly with Nadai variations (Misram-Tisram-Chatursam), as per old sampradaya in the company of Vaikom Gopalakrishnan (Ghatam).
